By definition (in terms of political science) the European Union is a confederation ( A permanent union of sovereign states for common action in relation to other states. Usually created by treaty but often later adopting a common constitution, confederations tend to be established for dealing with critical issues such as defense, foreign affairs, or a common currency, with the central government being required to provide support for all members.)

Very amusing!

The reason the Dutch motto is in French is of course because it is the motto of the house of Orange-Nassau, historic rulers of the French Principality of Orange and the current Dutch Royal family. Perhaps the English motto has a similar Norman origin.

Good post. You make some great points that most people do not fully understand.

“I have to say, now, that I hadn’t originally intended to go back and document my work (including my mistakes and assumptions) to such a level that I could publish it as a blog post. My own code has some useful comments in, and I have notes separate to the individual source files, but I knew they wouldn’t be as useful as having a detailed guide available on the Web. Perhaps I would have covered the necessary steps to get the graphs working if I had been stuck for something to blog about one day, but the thing that really made me want to do this was the support I got from the community in diagnosing my problems. There is stereotype that developers can be unwelcoming to strangers in their IRC channels, and they can be impatient with people who do not know how to use their software, but I did not find this at all when I went to ask for help in the #pear channel.”

I like how you explained that. Very helpful. Thanks.

With great software projects, the developers can predict how their users are going to react to their software, and can respond to concerns before they are even raised. In the case of Hotwire, the developers have already answered my questions “What are the technical limitations preventing the Hotwire features being available in a HotSSH session? What if some of the code was refactored out to run on the remote end?” with a page on their wiki about remoting.

The very next day after writing this post, I’m watching the boat race coverage on television and one of the rowers interviewed says what an integral part of UK culture the boat race is, and substantiates this by saying it is mentioned in “1984”. The relevant quote from the book is:

“One of ‘em pushed me once,” said the old man. “I recollect it as if it was yesterday. It was Boat Race night - terribly rowdy they used to get on Boat Race night - and I bumps into a young bloke on Shaftesbury Avenue. …”

I really appreciate this positive blog! I can happily report that a number of these issues are fixed now in 0.700; e.g. the echo -e works as expected, I started using ngettext to do plural forms (no more “1 pipelines”) and last but not least the completion is entirely replaced and is more bash-like.

http://code.google.com/p/hotwire-shell/wiki/HotwireChanges#Changes_in_Hotwire_0.700_(Current_Release)

Still thinking though about the history; I think you are right in that it’s not totally clear what’s going on. The buttons also take up far too much space. Any ideas/mockups around that are appreciated.
